Imagine a perfectly sweet, incredibly creamy drink that comes together in mere minutes. That’s exactly what you get with this amazing Banana Smoothie. It’s a staple in my kitchen, a quick fix for a healthy breakfast, a satisfying snack, or even a light dessert.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings: 1 serving

Ingredients

  • 1 medium ripe banana fresh or frozen
  • 0.5 cup milk dairy, almond, oat, or soy
  • 0.25 cup plain or Greek yogurt optional, or substitute with more milk, silken tofu, or half an avocado
  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup optional, adjust to taste
  • 1 handful ice cubes optional, if not using frozen banana

Method

  1. Prepare your banana: If using a fresh banana, peel it and break it into a few chunks. If using a frozen banana, simply peel and break it into 2-3 pieces. The smaller pieces help with easier blending.
  2. Add liquid first: Pour your chosen milk (½ to ¾ cup) into the blender. Adding the liquid first helps the blades spin more freely and prevents ingredients from getting stuck at the bottom.
  3. Add creamy ingredients: Next, add your yogurt (¼ cup) to the blender. If you're skipping the yogurt, add any other creamy substitutions like avocado or nut butter at this stage.
  4. Introduce the banana: Place your banana pieces into the blender. Make sure they are relatively close to the blades but not directly jammed if your blender isn't super powerful.
  5. Optional sweeteners and ice: If you're using honey or maple syrup, add it now. If you want an extra cold or thicker smoothie and aren't using frozen bananas, add a handful of ice cubes. Start with 3-4 cubes and add more if needed.
  6. Blend until smooth: Secure the lid on your blender. Start blending on a low speed to break down the larger chunks, then gradually increase to high speed. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy. This usually takes about 30-60 seconds, depending on your blender.
  7. Check consistency: If the smoothie is too thick, add a little more milk, one tablespoon at a time, and blend again. If it's too thin, add a few more ice cubes or another small piece of frozen banana and blend until desired thickness is reached.
  8. Serve immediately: Pour your freshly made Banana Smoothie into a glass and enjoy right away for the best taste and texture.

Notes

For best results, use ripe, preferably frozen bananas for optimal sweetness and creaminess. Always add liquid to the blender first. While best enjoyed fresh, leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours or frozen into ice cubes. This versatile recipe can be customized with protein powder, nut butter, greens, other fruits, cocoa powder, or spices. Adjust consistency by adding more frozen banana/ice for a thicker smoothie, or more liquid for a thinner one. Can be made dairy-free by using plant-based milk and skipping yogurt.
